Wereldberoemde Kaesong Collectie via atelier naar Nationaal Museum in Litouwen

Begin December van het afgelopen jaar kreeg ons atelier bezoek van Frans Broersen, een Nederlandse kunsthandelaar en tentoonstellingen curator. Hij zat met een probleem. Hij had 2000 prenten gekocht in Noord-Korea en wilde deze in de loop der jaren gaan tentoon stellen. Het lag in de planning om de eerste tentoonstelling in 2010 te organiseren. Hij had zojuist bericht gekregen om al eind Januari 2008 100 prenten tentoon te stellen in het Nationaal Museum van Litouwen. De vraag die bij ons neer werd gelegd was simpel. Is het mogelijk om deze 100 prenten binnen 4 weken klaar te krijgen voor deze tentoonstelling. Wij hebben gelijk ja gezegd en toen de heer Broersen weer was vertrokken zijn we gelijk met man en macht begonnen. Er moest zeer veel materiaal besteld worden waarop een levertijd zat. En dan zat je ook nog met Kerst en Nieuwjaar. Maar we hebben het gered. Alle prenten waren op tijd klaar en de directeur van Restauratie atelier Sterken BV, Jeroen Jochems, werd uitgenodigd om op 24 Januari in Litouwen de opening bij te wonen van een unieke kunstcollectie. Het doel was om te starten in Litouwen, daarna Letland aan te doen en dan via Rusland en Europa uiteindelijk over een jaar of 7 in Amerika uit te komen.
Afgelopen week werden wij gebeld dat de tentoonstelling in Litouwen met een maand is verlengd wegens overweldigende belangstelling. Er komen meer dan 1000 bezoekers per dag op af. Amerika is nu al geïnteresseerd in deze kunstcollectie terwijl het eigenlijk pas de bedoeling was over 7 jaar daar uit te komen.

VILNIUS (Reuters Life!) - Picturesque mountains and waterfalls, blossoming trees, colorful birds and dancers in masks are not what people usually associate with the secretive state of North Korea.
But this is the view of the country Dutch art collector Frans Broersen has depicted in Europe's first comprehensive exhibition of paintings from the communist country.
"I was intrigued by the country because nobody knew anything about it. It is the most isolated country in the world," said Broersen, who says he and his partners have the largest collection of contemporary North Korean paintings in the world.
"It would be nonsense to say that people cannot create beautiful art in a communist state," Broersen said.
Though he also added: "There is no 'modern' art in North Korea. The authorities say that if you paint a tree, it should look like a tree."
He has put about 100 pictures from his 2000-strong Kaeson collection, named after the historic capital of the Kingdom of Korea, on display in Lithuania, where he is based. They were collected over two years during his travels to North Korea.
Though communism and socialist realism have gone hand-in-hand in the past, Broersen said he deliberately avoided it. A picture of a miner is one exception, but there are no portraits of North Korea's leaders, or propaganda art.
A number of oil paintings are in the manner of French post-impressionists.
Broersen said the artists did not copy western art and that some had never heard of Dutch impressionist Vincent Van Gogh.
He said some younger artists were trying to develop what he called "a North Korean avant-garde", pointing to a painting which showed a lively picture of ordinary people taking a bus trip on a hot day.
This contrasted with the more classical landscape pictures, which the exhibition organizers say are traditional to Asian art and which dominated the collection.
Broersen personally visited the main art studios in North Korean capital Pyongyang, including the Mansudae studio, which employs a few hundred painters and sculptors. He also met individual artists, both in the capital and in the provinces.
He took the first trip to North Korea in 2006, after convincing North Korean diplomats in London he was serious about spending hard currency, and made several trips afterwards.
He said he bought some 500 paintings, paying from 100 euros to 17,000 euros per piece, during each trip.
Broersen brushed aside doubts that he could be seen as bringing money that would support the North Korean government or help to promote it abroad.
The country is one of the poorest in the world and the United States has put it on a list of governments sponsoring terrorism.
"I have paid money to artists, not the state, and people need money to survive. You can see the poverty, and the country is really struggling," he said.
Broersen said North Korean art could become as popular as Chinese art in Western markets and that he would try and auction some of it in about 10 years.

Een tentoonstelling met kunst uit de Democratische Volksrepubliek Korea vindt plaats in de Litouwse hoofdstad Vilnius. Honderd schilderijen die afkomstig zijn uit de Democratische Volksrepubliek Korea zijn samengesteld door een Nederlandse kunsthandelaar voor de tentoonstelling, die op 24 januari werd geopend.
Vilnius lijken misschien een ongebruikelijke locatie voor een tentoonstelling van de Democratische Volksrepubliek Korea kunstwerk, maar dankzij de vastberadenheid van een man, het talent van Noord-Korea kunstenaars eindelijk kan worden genoten in Europa.
Nederlands kunsthandelaar en tentoonstellingen curator, Frans Broersen, is erin geslaagd om toegang te krijgen zeldzame kunstwerken in de Democratische Volksrepubliek Korea.
Het koste meerdere reizen naar de Democratische Volksrepubliek Korea waar na vele onderhandelingen met geld van investeerders uiteindelijk 2000 prenten zijn gekocht, de zogenaamde Kaesong Collectie.
Broersen heeft nu 100 prenten uit die collectie tentoongesteld in Litouwen, het land waar hij woont. Veel van de kunstenaars heeft hij persoonlijk ontmoet. Met behulp van vertalers werd er gecommuniceerd en in totaal werden er dus 2000 prenten gekocht op diverse reizen, die nu aan het publiek worden geshowd. De eerstvolgende landen waar de tentoonstelling naar toe gaat zijn Estland, Letland en Rusland.
